For Washingtonians who want to stay fit when they're chasing down votes or support for all their different causes and issues, there's no place quite like the seven-story DC YMCA, a centerpiece in Washington. Many can be found running on the DC YMCA treadmill or elliptical trainer while watching CNN on the flat-screen TVs, among other activities.
This is no ordinary YMCA – this is quite a deluxe edition in comparison to where you might have taken your first swimming lessons. With seven stories, there's a rock climbing gym, squash courts, indoor track, indoor pool, massage, towel service and personal trainers. Many take in a lunchtime basketball game in case they ever get invited to a scrimmage with President Obama. Others prefer to work out alone on the machines or weights, available on two floors with televisions. If you find yourself unmotivated to complete an entire workout, you can opt for a personal trainer who will help you through and meet your goals.
The gym also offers several group classes throughout the day, including yoga, spinning, aerobics and kickboxing. Most take place early morning, lunchtime or after work. There's always a mad rush to the gym during these hours, so if you want to avoid the crowd, aim for an 11:00am or 2:00pm workout. During those times, you can even get your own swimming lane at the pool. In the afternoon, an after-school program brings local students for swimming lessons or gym class, so be prepared for a swarm of yelling kids. You can also take swimming lessons, lifeguarding classes, or masters' swimming if you're looking for a little more challenge. There's also triathlon training, where groups train and motivate each other together.
Locker rooms come with locks and towels, and laundry service is available if you purchase an annual locker. There's a sauna and showers, and you can schedule massages for an additional fee. The women's locker room also has a sun room where people like to take lunch, stretch out or read.
