One of Bethesda Row's highlighted additions, Cork & Fork is the Maryland-based location for the Virginia wine shop. Featuring more than 700 brands of wine, Cork & Fork brings the pure enjoyment of wine drinking and eating through its selection and events. Its prime location lets people pick up a bottle on the way home from work or out of the Bethesda Metrorail subway stop, and is a fun place just to wander and examine the latest offerings from around the world.
Opened in 2008, Cork & Fork is a pleasant if not slightly intimidating step into wine country. The walls around the shop are covered in shelf upon shelf of wine bottles of every kind. Bistro tables covered with French country linens and decorated with wine and cheese accoutrements provide mouth-watering ideas of how the weekend should be spent.
Cheese boards, wine openers and books are also for sale, in addition to the rows and rows of wines. It's almost like a bookshop where you can spend an afternoon browsing the shelves, except you'll be reading varietals and vintages instead of titles and authors.
However, the friendly owners and managers are more than happy to help you sift through the massive number of options and to help you make your selection. Even easier, there are free tastings every Saturday from 1-5. Or, choose to attend one of the wine seminars at the shop held by a winemaker or expert to further your knowledge. There are also wine and beer tasting events during the week, including pairings with cheeses, fruits and nuts. A recent tasting included Amish cheese with local figs over Dogfish Head beers, and another focused on organic wines.
HelloMetro Tip: Cork and Fork offers an astounding number of wines from all parts of the world and regions, including its own made in Virginia. It strives to bring in wines not typically found in other shops and also offers a wide selection of beers, which are constantly being added. Visit the Facebook page for regular updates on events and sales promotions. There are two other locations – one on 14th and Church in Washington and another in Gainesville, Va.
