The Tidal Basin, situated directly off the Mall, is a beautiful little oasis of water among the monuments and roadways, lined with the pink confetti of cherry blossoms in spring and autumn colors in fall. At one side, Thomas Jefferson stands peacefully inside his white marble monument, calming the masses who flock the Tidal Basin each day. On the other side, FDR's unusual memorial of various scenes provides insight into the 20th century president's work and life. The third monument is a dedication to George Mason, the “Father of the Bill of Rights” and a delegate from Virginia to the Constitutional Convention.
The Tidal Basin was constructed in 1880s for two purposes – one was to be an aesthetically pleasing park, and the other was to maintain water levels between the Potomac and the Washington Channel as the high tides roll in, using a gate function. The entire basin measures 107 acres and is nearly 10 feet deep.
In the past, people used to play in the basin, but today only drunk Congressmen and the occasional slip-and-fall victim will find their way into the water. The Tidal Basin leads to the East Potomac Park, where several ballfields and a golf course can be found and other recreational activities take place.
There's a path that follows along the water, leading walkers to the Jefferson Memorial, and many runners and bikers enjoy circling the path for a scenic workout. In spring, when the cherry blossoms burst open, there's not much room for running as visitors crowd the path with cameras and strollers. Still, it's one of the prettiest views for blossoms and for monuments. Benches are situated around the basin for a rest and to enjoy the scenery, and there's always a step to sit on at the Jefferson Memorial. When the weather warms up, people can rent paddle boats and paddle around the basin. Boats are $12 an hour for a two-person vessel and $19 for a 4-person one. During the cherry blossom season, it's important to reserve them ahead of time.
HelloWashingtonDC Tip: Parking is extremely limited, so most people arrive on tour bus or by foot. Prepare for a long walk by wearing comfortable walking shoes and always have a camera on hand. There are restrooms at the Jefferson Memorial and the FDR Memorial.
