Smithsonian American Art Museum: Simply stunning

There is perhaps no place more fitting for a world-class museum of American art than the nation’s capital, Washington D.C.  There, the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s impressive collections span more than three centuries, and are displayed in a building a work of art itself.

Constructed between 1836 and 1868, the downtown Greek Revival structure was one of the first public buildings in the city, and was the even the site of Abraham Lincoln’s inaugural ball in 1865.  Lovely curving staircases, vaulted galleries and porticos modeled on the Parthenon are historic highlights, but the heart of the museum has a decidedly modern design.

The central Kogod Courtyard spans 28,000 square feet, with a soaring 900-ton steel and glass roof.  Stone floors, water features and indoor trees make the courtyard a contemporary and peaceful place for visitors to enjoy.

Back in the museum’s expansive galleries, more than 7,000 artists are on display, including masters like Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, Edward Hopper and Georgia O’Keefe.   The impressive collection, begun in 1829 with gifts from private donors, is considered the first federal art collection.

Today, the museum has the largest collections of American impressionist paintings, New Deal art, American sculpture and masterpieces from the Gilded Age.  Other highlights include impressive collections of photography, African art and decorative arts and crafts.

Historic and contemporary folk art, images of western expansion and realist art from the first half of the 20th century are also displayed.  The third floor also features interesting and unique contemporary works by modern masters like David Hockney.

With free admission year-round and membership in the Smithsonian stable of museums, the American Art Museum is a downright cultural steal for visitors.  Come for an hour or stay for a day; either way it’s a wonderful must-see spot for locals and tourists alike.
