Artist Bio
For the past 33 years Janie McGee has created volumes of art telling the story of Black history in America. Her love for history began one summer on a project at the University of Cincinnati. She worked 10 weeks in the Harriet Beecher Stowe House creating mosaics depicting the Underground Railroad. That experience set a flame in her spirit to create images that tell the story of Blacks’ struggles, and triumphs in America. McGee is a Fine Artist, Painter, Author, and Illustrator. She depicts Black History, whimsical art, and design.McGee’s art style is moving towards “Spoke Art". Spoke Art is a name for the art form she created for her style. It’s a style of art that is defined by the voice and not the technique. Her love for the impressionist style of art is combined with Black history, soul, and folk art. It is a form of art that lends itself to expression, color, form, and voice. After studying Outsider Art from the Alabama region, she started developing this style of art painting on wood, creating dynamic textures with mixed media. The form of Spoke Art she has executed has evolved to her current style.
