Stained Glass Pub: Family-friendly dining
Apr 6, 2010
The Stained Glass Pub in Silver Spring is the place to go if you want tasty, plentiful food at bargain prices in a charming, family-friendly place.
Bubbling, full-of-toppings pizza, generously filled shrimp, ham and cheese melts, and even tender New York Strip Steaks with all the fixings are just some of the entrées that keep locals coming back for more.
On a recent trip there, a lightly breaded haddock sandwich grilled so it was thoroughly cooked yet moist was served on a just-baked roll. Served with crispy, thin fries and creamy coleslaw, the $8.99 lunch was more than filling.
A friend ordered a small tomato, pepperoni and cheese pizza for $8.99 that nearly overflowed with toppings. The portion was so generous, she had to take half of it home.
It was the same with the multi-layered Reese's peanut butter pie. The lusciously rich flavor and large portion had us asking for a carryout box.
As tasty as the food is, what families truly appreciate is the laid-back, seat-yourself atmosphere. There are plenty of booths and tables to accommodate all size groups and the wait staff is friendly, often refilling drinks before the diner even realizes one is needed.
The Pub opened in 1973 as one of the first sports bars in Montgomery County. While big-screen TVs still televise sports throughout the day and night, most days families frequent the restaurant and its sister Pub in Elkridge, Maryland.
Outside seating is available during warm weather.
Just over the northern border of Washington, D.C., Silver Spring is an easy drive or Metro trip from almost anywhere in the Metro area. The area has recently undergone a renaissance that's brought up-scale shopping center and entertainment complexes so there's plenty to do before or after you dine.
HelloWashingtonDC Tip: Unless you truly want to dine outdoors for some reason, sit inside. The Stained Glass Pub is located just off a major thoroughfare so traffic noise often makes outdoor dining less than relaxing.
